About Albert Torres

Since 1994 Albert Torres has professionally dedicated his life to the celebration and performance of Latin and Afro-Caribbean music and dance and has become an integral figure in the preservation and proliferation of Latin music and dance world wide.

His own West Coast Salsa Congress is the largest in the world and transforms its Los Angeles home into an exciting music and dance event that attracts thousands of Latin music enthusiasts, dancers, and historians from all over the world and the best Latin artists of the business. From his 1st Salsa Congress in 1999 to 2002 from which grew his mission statement, “Creating Unity through Salsa,” and until now, Albert Torres continues to live by these words at home and abroad unbeknown to most.

After a decade of traveling to Salsa Congresses around the world Albert Torres and the Salsa Seven Inc. finally produced the World Salsa Championships. A first rate competitive sporting event that brings the best Salsa dancers from all over the world to compete in 4 distinct categories (On1, On2, Cabaret, and Team). Now entering its 4th year, The 3rd Annual World Salsa Championship, can be seen worldwide on ESPN International and ESPN Deportes and ESPN 2 in the USA.

Torres is the premiere west coast promoter and producer of Latin music events. He has presented the biggest names in the industry with artists such as NG La Banda, Orchestra Aragon, Sonora Ponceña, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Roberto Roena, Cachao with Andy Garcia, Johnny Pacheco, Africando, Andy Montañez, Típica 73, Ray Baretto, Fania, Grammy award-winners Eddie Palmieri, Larry Harlow & The Latin Legends, Tito Puente & Johnny Pacheco, and Spanish Harlem Orchestra, and is known for being the first promoter to risk controversy and finances for bringing the legendary Cuban band Los Van Van to the United States. In 1996, Albert received The City of Los Angeles Mayor's Certificate of Appreciation for his time and effort in organizing the family cultural arts festival El Baile de Los Ninos, his own 501 (c) (3). El Baile de Los Ninos brings several hundred families from the community together to enjoy an afternoon of Caribbean and Latin American entertainment, music, dance, arts and crafts, and cuisine. Albert states that he produces the event "…to pass the rhythm of our beautiful music to the children so that they may pass it on to theirs." The mission of Baile de Los Niños is to reach out to underprivileged children and at-risk youth in the aim to keep them out of street gangs and away from drugs by helping them focus in new directions and providing programming opportunities that nurture their love of music and dance. Under the auspices of Albert Torres, children from Colombia, New Zealand, and Japan have traveled for the first time to perform in the West Coast Salsa Congress.

With years of extensive travel and producing experience behind him, Albert Torres is truly a premier advocate of Salsa music and Latin dance events and although word on the street spreads that Tropical Latin music is in a decline, Torres’ un-relentless commitment to Latin and Afro-Caribbean music and dance would have you think different because he plays a key role in keeping Latin music alive in the United States and around the world.

Dj ArmandoPanama
USA

Armando Justiniani is a native of Panama and although he now resides in the United States, he continues to relive his childhood through the music he presents to others as a locally known disc jockey.
As a young boy he acquired a taste for the Latin rhythms through the influence of his family and their heritage. This journey began with being the most sought after teenage sound mixer at a mobile music company in his home town. His appreciation for Latin music has continued to grow and touches virtually every aspect of his life. Whether he is at home, in his car or in a nightclub, you will find him moving to a beat that is heard by many but appreciated by few. His taste in music has matured, allowing his collection to grow as broad as the industry.
Unlike a compact disc in a jewel case, Armando doesn’t believe in being confined by his surroundings. He feels he has a purpose in the salsa community and has put his heart and soul into promoting events and bringing talent to our area, which has been unsurpassed. Hosting Frankie Martinez, Lori Perez, Henry Knowles, Troy & Jorjet, Juan Matos, Olivia Dasso, Duplessy Monique-Walker, Salsamania, David Stein & Jennifer and Hacha y Machete has confirmed that he is committed to sharing his enthusiasm of his culture. He has entertained hundreds of salseros at local events, the Northwest Salsa Congress, the Seattle Salsa Congress and two consecutive years at the Acapulco Salsa Congress.
Armando’s philosophy is that music and dancing is as individual as each human being. Through the selections that he spins and the events that he participates in, his primary goal is to please his followers who allow him to embrace his passion.

Dj Michelle
Hong Kong
Michelle Tanmizi was born in Indonesia, but has lived in many countries, including France, Africa and Central and South America. She is currently based in Hong Kong. At a very early age, she discovered that she not only has a love of music, but an 'ear' for it and an instinct for rhythms. By the age of 5, she was imitating her sister's piano pieces without having learned to play the instrument at all. At the age of 6, she impressed her sister's piano teacher by playing a piece purely by memory and by ear and was finally allowed to take the piano lessons she so wanted. Hence began her musical education. Michelle's DJ debut started in 2003 with Hip Hop, R&B and commercial dance music, at the Hong Kong Sevens, an international Rugby event that draws thousands of people from around the world. After her first gig, the corporate box where she worked with another DJ, was voted the best party box of the event. The rest, as they say, is history. She is now one of the regular DJs at the event every year. Being also as passionate about salsa dancing as she is about spinning music, Michelle has an instinctive understanding of rhythm. This is felt in her DJ work and the music she plays. She intuitively understands what the dancers want and which songs will make them move and ‘heat up’ the floor. This instinctive talent coupled with her musical background makes her a Hong Kong salsa DJ favourite. An astute observer and a 'people person', she gets her inspiration from watching the dance floor and the interaction between the dancers. Being possibly the only Professional female Salsa DJ in Asia makes her unique in her field but her music makes her special. Spinning salsa music is second nature to Michelle. Since she started, she has not only drawn in crowds to any club where she works, but has also earned herself the reputation of being one of the best Salsa DJs in Hong Kong. (Michelle is also a certified DJ by the London School of Sound.) Resume (excludes all private function engagements) Club work C Club, Hong Kong Club 97, Hong Kong 1/5 Bar and Club (first Salsa DJ to perform there), Hong Kong Tribeca (previously-named Club ING), Hong Kong Klong Bar and Club, Hong Kong Joe Bananas, Hong Kong Nzingha Lounge - Resident Salsa DJ (Hong Kong) Armani Bar, Hong Kong – Resident Latin DJ Noriega, Bangkok, Thailand Hard Rock Cafe, Singapore Union Square Salsa Club, Singapore Club Cache, New York Salsa Congresses/Festivals where DJ Michelle has performed Hong Kong Salsa Festival 2006 Thailand international Latin Festival 2006 Beijing Salsa Championship 2006 New York Salsa Congress 2006 Singapore International Salsa Festival 2006 Upcoming Salsa Events where DJ Michelle will perform Sydney Salsa Congress 2007 West Coast Salsa Congress 2007 Hawaii Salsa Festival 2007 Beijing Salsa Championship 2007 Singapore International Salsa Festival 2007 Japan Salsa Congress 2007

The initial purpose of the collection was to find good music to practice to, but little by little, he was overtaken by a collector's passion. His debut as a professional DJ was when he was assisting SalsaChino in their small venues, through 2002 and 2003. Word of his selection spread rapidly and soon he was playing in the most popular Salsa clubs in Hong Kong. Until 2006, he was a regular DJ for the HK Salsa Festival. Teresa & Jeio
Korea

Hailing from Seoul, Teresa & Jeio are without a doubt the top salsa performers in Korea. Since partnering up in 2005, they have won their championship title twice at the Korea Salsa Congress in 2008 and 2009. This energetic partnership is known for more than just trophies in the Korean salsa scene. Their style always leaves such a strong impression on the audience and other dancers around, because it is so authentic yet unique, and very edgy but also very "Latin". Having grown up in Latin America herself, Teresa brings so much Latin zest to this couple's style, which is unprecedented in Korea; Jeio's wild and flashy vibe on stage is the only thing that can match up to her fiery Latin energy. Currently, Teresa & Jeio are co-directors of Salsoul Dancers, regarded as the best performing dance team in Korea; they have also recently launched their new venture, Salsoul School, a school for Latin dance lovers in Korea.

Hyun Pillhwan
South Korea

Hyun, Pillhwan and his lovely wife Choi, Eun-Yong are from Seoul, S.Korea where they own and operate 'Candela' Dance Studio and Candela Productions. the oldest salsa dance studio and production company in Korea. Pillhwan became locally famous in South Korea when he left a very prestigeous and successful career with the international business division of Samsung Corporation for his new life's passion....salsa. During this time Pillhwan's salsa training and influences have come from such well known salsa legends as Francisco Vazquez, Santo Rico Dance Company, Descarga Latina, Eddie Torres and others. Pillhwan is presently an 'on2' dancer but is equally capable of 'on1' and other styles including recent interests in casino rueda and bachata. Prior to having their lovely young, 3 year old daughter Ji-Min, in 2006, Pillhwan and Eun-Young were very active training, travelling and performing with their dance team and promoting several large local and international salsa events in Seoul, S.Korea. Since that time however they have focused primarily on running their growing studio in Seoul, training their own instructor staff and raising their daughter. Due to Pillhwan's previous international business experience, he loves innovation, making new friends and working with his students as well as exploring other kinds of dances that can bring joy to people's hearts. Pillhwan and Eun-Young enjoy sharing their joy of salsa not only with Koreans but also the growing international population of Seoul. Seoul, S.Korea has over a dozen first class salsa clubs and is fast becoming recognized as one of the major salsa cities in the world. As such, we are pleased and honored to have Pillhwan Hyun as our Korean representative here at the China Salsa Congress.
